Talk 6 - Why champions never wait for later

How much of your time goes to what truly makes your heart beat faster? And how much to noise? Later, when I've retired. Later, when the kids are grown. Later, when I have more certainty. But ... later may never come.

Exercise 6 - The Timeline Exercise

A shrew lives two years. An elephant seventy. Yet both have roughly one billion heartbeats. The shrew races through them, the elephant takes its time. As a human, you've cracked the code: you live three times longer than your heart rate predicts. You have bonus heartbeats. But instead of celebrating them, most people act as though they have an infinite supply and keep putting off what really matters. This exercise makes visible where your heartbeats are going, and what you want them to do. Lay an imaginary line on the floor, running from one side of the room to the other. The start is your childhood. The end is your distant future. Walk slowly towards the present. Along the way, pause at important moments that come up, especially ones that brought you joy, or where you're proud of how you handled them. Take your time to relive them. From the present, mark three stops in your future: one year, five years, ten years from now. Walk slowly to each point. Close your eyes and let an intuitive image surface: what have you achieved? What has become important? What have you left behind? At the end, turn around and look back at where you stand now. Speaking as that future you, address yourself: what do you want to pass on to yourself right now?
